  On 18 June 2026, staff of the Institute of Water Problems, Hydropower and Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan conducted a field expedition in Dangara District within the framework of the project “Earth Observation-based Agricultural Drought Monitoring Systems for Tajikistan”, in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The event brought together representatives of government ministries and agencies responsible for agriculture, water resources, disaster risk management, environmental protection, land management and geodesy, as well as representatives of scientific and educational institutions.
  The main objective of the expedition was to strengthen national capacity in drought monitoring and early warning systems, demonstrate modern Earth observation technologies and geospatial tools, and promote cooperation among government agencies, the scientific community, and international partners to reduce the impacts of climate change on agriculture and natural resources.
The field expedition was also attended by experts from the ESCAP Regional Drought Mechanism from the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of India, the Russian Federation, and the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as representatives of international organizations and development partners.
Participants were introduced to practical methods for measuring soil moisture in agricultural fields, assessing crop conditions, and applying modern Earth observation technologies, digital platforms, and agricultural monitoring tools. Particular attention was given to the exchange of knowledge and experiences with international experts in drought monitoring and drought risk management.
The expedition highlighted the importance of innovative technologies and satellite data for strengthening the national drought monitoring system, improving early warning mechanisms, enhancing the capacity of specialists, and increasing the country’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.
